Why Traditional Design Matters
Since the beginning of permanent settlement some 12,000 years ago humankind has experimented with and refined traditional architectural patterns. This time tested approach to building serves us well. Unfortunately with the arrogance of modernism, vernacular and traditional design was derided as old fashioned and outdated. How wrong these modern zealots were.
Traditional patterns of design were slowly perfected to embrace real human needs, respond to local climates and fit each unique topography. A truly sustainable approach to building. While modern architecture's focus on technological efficiency
ignores human needs, encouraging unhealthy and environmentally unfriendly patterns of building.
Shockingly professional training in architecture and design is still heavily skewed towards modernism. It took me years to unlearn the lessons of architecture school.
